A La Crate Helps Bring Creative Vision to Life with Unique, DIY Event Rentals

By Kelly Church

At A La Crate in Monona, WI, customers can find vintage, antique and reclaimed pieces that inspire do-it-yourself projects. After owner Sarah Mullins and her husband Jeff struggled to find items for their wedding that gave the event a unique, personalized touch, they opened their storefront to give other people a way to rent creative pieces that may otherwise be hard to find.

"We struggled finding rentals for our own wedding that had character and added the aesthetic we were hoping to create," Mullins said. "After purchasing and trying to sell all of the décor after our wedding, we met other couples having a similar struggle."

Mullins calls Madison a "green" community, so the couple thought their one-of-a-kind boutique shop that gives people a place to inspire events and projects would do well. The store is 3,000 square-feet of space, giving customers a large selection, but the store has to be selective about what they decide to put on the shelves.

"We've actually been making a large portion of our rental line lately," Mullins said. "Reclaimed harvest tables, hand-built cocktail tables, bars, you name it. We work with local artists to create unique pieces of furniture that help fill a rental need."

From large pieces of furniture including couches, chairs, benches and tables, to smaller household and decorative items like crates, shelving and platters, A La Crate has all kinds of essentials for events.

When renting through A La Crate, customers pay per item. Rental fees include pick-up, drop-off and the length of the rental. A La Crate does deliver to destinations, and for those customers who need a little creative assistance, the team at the store can help put together a vision with recommendations.

"We strive to make the rental process simple for our customers," Mullins said. "From the moment they call, email or visit our website. Planning events is stressful enough. We want the rental process to be fun and easy."
