Every year, summer rushes past as countless high schoolers anxiously await the fall, and the return to books, pencils, and studies that comes with it. Students of Beloit Memorial High School in Beloit, Wisconsin, certainly feel more confident with their options for their future, however, thanks to the efforts of Beloit Memorial staff and the local community.
Beloit Memorial has formed over 60 relationships with businesses in the area. Through various programs, students work with businesses to gain invaluable career exploration experience, and businesses benefit from the vital opportunity to establish a voice in the next generation of the workforce. The result is a strong, informed bond between student, business, and community.
Beloit Memorial is the only school in Wisconsin that employs a career advocate, a person who works to spread awareness of post-secondary planning and its importance to students.
"The career advocate works closely with students to explore interests through Career Cruising," explains Dr. Tina Salzman, Principal at Beloit Memorial. Career Cruising is a program that helps students discover their interests and talents and build a career plan. A career advocate also organizes monthly career panels and job-shadowing opportunities, either of which could lead to potential internships or Youth Apprenticeships.
But it's not just the many outreach programs helping students succeed. The staff at Beloit Memorial does everything it can to help students grow, and many Advanced Placement courses are available for those seeking to advance to higher education.
"Students can select from over 24 different Advanced Placement courses," says Salzman. "Project Lead the Way in engineering and computer science, industry certifications in automotive, culinary, child development, welding, and CNC machining." Out of all Advanced Placement, Project Lead the Way, and transcripted class opportunities, students have nearly 40 different college credit options from the moment they start their freshman year.
Of course, Beloit Memorial offers even more than top quality career training. Its fine arts programs are widely recognized for their success. The Beloit Memorial Jazz Band has been invited to the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition in New York City. The theatre program has received several Tommy Awards for past performances, and the choral program, known for its impressive performances of complicated music, has been invited to perform at multiple statewide events. It's safe to say that Beloit Memorial High School has the utmost success of every student in mind, and Beloit Memorial stands as a model in education.
