CrossFit Madtown Has a Lasting Impact

By Jake Levin

As a former strength and conditioning coach at an NCAA Division I school, Keysha Benzing realizes how few college athletes make it to the next level.

It's not for a lack of trying; Benzing, along with several of her peers, felt as though they were still making an impact with their athletes, but that they weren't accessing them until it was too late.

Deciding that she wanted to have a larger impact on her athlete's training, Benzing her fellow coaches opened CrossFit Madtown in Middleton, Wis. in January 2009.

"We wanted to have a larger impact on athletes' training, have the ability to work with other populations and have more freedom with our work schedules," explained Benzing, who is the owner of the gym.

CrossFit Madtown is family and team based, Benzing feels, and is a place where everyone is accepted and welcomed. For many, Benzing said, the gym is a sanctuary, a place to relieve stress in a positive environment.

"In our experience, we've seen many individuals enter the gym after a rotten day leaving feeling better and with a smile on their face," Benzing proudly stated. "CrossFit Madtown is more than just a gym, we're a community."

Athletes of all ages and abilities are welcomed, the younger generation no exception. Youth classes are offered for those between the ages of 3-22, with an emphasis on posture, breathing and technique designed to increase your athletic ability. Obviously, the drills for a 3-year-old will differ from those in their teens and early 20s, but all with the same purpose of improving speed, power, agility, coordination, balance, stamina, coordination and mental toughness.

Strength and power training techniques are introduced to the young adults, where the right way to squat, dead lift, bench press, et al is taught. Olympic-style weightlifting, such as the snatch and the clean & jerk, are also featured.

Benzing said that at CrossFit Madtown, you'll be treated as an individual and not just a number.

"If you want to be at your best and get results, in a positive, uplifting, encouraging environment then Crossfit MadTown is the place for you," she said. "We joke around at MadTown that we are Madison's best kept secret!"
