Everything you need to know about Hardwood Floors: An Interview with Marius Kupstas at TMJ Hardwood Flooring

By Marius Kupstas

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

TMJ Hardwood Flooring is a locally owned and operated business based out of Mequon, Wisconsin. We have been specializing in hardwood flooring installation, refinishing and custom flooring since 2001 and service customers throughout southeast Wisconsin.

What are the main decisions that people need to make when it comes to choosing new hardwood flooring?

We at TMJ Hardwood Flooring provide our clients with the best possible flooring solutions by taking in consideration each client's individual needs and expectations. When choosing new hardwood flooring keep in mind that even though hardwood is strong, durable, and natural product it will still ding and dent. Some floors are harder than others and some finishes are more scratch-resistant. We offer our customers wood samples and explain the pros and cons of different species, grades and finishes. There are many factors that determine which flooring to use, but the main ones are where the flooring will be installed, the lifestyle of the homeowners, the home's décor and budget.

What type(s) of hardwood floors work best for high-traffic areas (and why)?

Hardwood floors do not handle high-traffic well, so we recommend using area rugs near doors to keep things clean and dry. Today's finishing material or sealer can withstand a big deal of wear and tear, but even laminate or engineered flooring needs to be kept dry at all times and that is difficult to do in high-traffic areas.

What are some of the most popular hardwood floors for homeowners in the Midwest?

The most common or popular species of wood that we come across in the Midwest is oak or maple. Both come in different grades, widths and are very durable when properly installed and finished / sealed. With good maintenance, wood floors will also last a lifetime.

Can you explain how to properly maintain hardwood floors so they last longer and still look good?

With the new finishes and cleaning products available in today's market, wood flooring is easy to maintain. However, in order to prevent damage, remove footwear or maintain proper heel-tip protectors. Use felt or rubber protectors under heavy furniture legs and chairs or use furniture casters. One cure for small individual dents when wood fibers are not broken is to cover it with a dampened cloth and press with an electric iron to draw fibers up.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to install hardwood floors but has a limited budget?

Installing hardwood floors can be an expensive project, but we will be more than happy to guide you through the process of achieving your desired results with your budget, priorities and taste in mind. Nothing adds as much style, warmth and character to interior as a wood floor. With a limited budget in mind, one solution is to install the floors in a few steps or areas. That can make the project tricky, but can be done effectively when planned well.
