Finding the Right Mover For You: an Interview with Heather Hettler of A Way Home Moving

By Heather Hettler

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a family owned and run, full service moving company that offers peace of mind with every move. We offer packing, loading, moving, unloading, unpacking, and after move cleaning services. We are an intrastate state moving company; meaning we only service Wisconsin at this time. We love what we do, and love helping others so this was the perfect fit for us. Moving can be very stressful, so we strive to make every move as easy as possible.

Where is the best place to look for recommendations for moving companies?

I would suggest turning to the Internet for customer reviews. The great thing about the Internet today is that you can find what ever your are looking for. Yelp is a great tool to utilize when researching a company. Google is another great tool. Just type in the name of the company that you are researching and see what pops up. The BBB is another great site to research.

Can I trust an estimate that wasn't done in person?

If your move is interstate, I would suggest getting an in-house estimate, every time. I would suggest getting 2 or 3 estimates. I realize that we all try to save money, but if an estimate is a lot lower than the rest or sounds to good to be true; then it probably is. If your move is local, an experienced estimator can generally get it pretty close to the time and cost; over the phone. I would personally suggest getting an in-house estimate though, that way you can see who you may be working with.

What are some clear signs that perhaps a moving company isn't reliable?

First off, do your homework. Check the Internet for reviews. As a business owner, we try but you cannot please everyone; but if there is clearly a pattern of negative reviews or "missed" moves, then I would suggest that you keep looking for a more reliable company.

How important is it that my moving company is licensed and insured? How do I make sure of this?

It is extremely important that your movers are licensed and insured. These are your personal possessions. Before I let anyone handle my belongings, I am going to want to know who they are. You should ask ask about licensing and insurance. You can verify also at the department of transportation and also at fmcsa.

Are you familiar with the website MovingScam.com? How useful is the information on this website?

To be honest, I had not heard of MovingScam.com before, but after reading these questions, I did my research. I love their suggestions and moving tips. They mention searching the yellow pages first for reputable movers. I too believe this to be true. Since we do have an add in the yellow pages, I loved it even more!

What is the best way for people to get in contact with you?

I always suggest that anyone interested in utilizing our services; goes to our webpage first. It is a great start in getting to know us. We are also in the yellow pages, have a link on yelp, or can be reached at 608.807.6079 or 608.807.8903. I hear from a lot of our customers that they have heard of us on google also.
