From Artist to Businessman: How A Dead Anchor Tattoo Got Its Start

By Elisha Neubauer

For those in the tattoo industry, finding a shop which fosters creative inspiration while simultaneously providing a comfortable, welcoming environment can be one of the most complicated parts of being a tattoo artist. After years of bouncing from shop to shop searching for his ideal work-home, Brandon Blackwood decided to take matters into his own hands.

Wanting to provide himself with a suitable working environment that would allow his career to flourish, as well as offering an open door for other artists looking to grow their opportunities, Blackwood launched A Dead Anchor Tattoo in 2012.

"I decided that I could go much further in my career if I didn't have the restrictions of working for someone else," Blackwood said.

He built an atmosphere which was filled with laughs, fun, and jokes. Each artist enjoys reciting personal stories, listening to client's tales, and getting to know the person sitting in their chair.

"It all boils down to the fact that we all love tattooing and piercing and because our clients can really see that, I believe it promotes the best experience," Blackwood said.

Blackwood has handpicked each of his artists to keep the intended feel of the shop. He encourages each one of his artists to provide an experience that is unique to the client. At A Dead Anchor Tattoo, not only do they aspire to create amazing and specialized artwork, but they strive for each client to truly enjoy the process: from start to finish. From the moment a client enters the shop, Blackwood and his crew look to create a comfortable and fun experience for every client.

While environment is vital to the success of the shop, Blackwood and his team ensure they are always learning, never stagnant. Whether they are learning the latest tricks and techniques, or working with the latest and greatest tools, products, and supplies, A Dead Anchor Tattoo is always on the top of its game.

At A Dead Anchor Tattoo, each of the artists truly enjoys what they do. They aim to make everything fun and exciting and, in turn, hope that their customers revel in the enthusiasm portrayed within the shop. The shop is within walking distance of the Camp Randall Stadium and offers clients a multitude of services, including general piercings, flash work, custom designs, portrait work, fine line, cover-ups, and so much more.

Walk-ins are welcome and appointments are available to reserve your favorite artist.
