Halo Cupcake Specializes In Unique Flavor Options

By Kelly Church

At Halo Cupcake, the menu of more than 100 cupcake flavors leaves little to be desired with a flavor for everyone. Owner Liz Malone took over the Loves Park, Ilinois bakery in June 2016 after deciding to change direction from a job that wasn't making her happy. She said Halo Cupcake was for sale and the timing was perfect. Since then, she's been baking creative cupcakes that have flavor options customers are likely not to find anywhere else.

"I've never been happier," Malone said. "I'd worked in the Madison area for about eight years before taking over Halo and it just feels good to be working in the community, and get involved in community events that are important to the people where I actually live."

Halo Cupcake flavors cover the spectrum. Customers will find nearly every traditional flavor there is including vanilla, chocolate, chocolate chip cookie dough, salted caramel, Oreo cookie, peanut butter cup and more. More unique flavor options include Twix, white chocolate raspberry, lemonade, cherry limeade, candy cane, French toast, pumpkin chocolate chip and even sweet potato. However, there is one cupcake that Malone wished her customers appreciated as much as she does.

"My personal favorite is peanut butter and jelly," Malone said. "It's a vanilla cupcake, filled with grape jam, and topped with peanut butter buttercream. I could eat peanut butter all the time, and love making peanut butter and jelly desserts. I just wish it sold better in the shop and no one ever buys it."

Malone wants her shop to offer the best tasting and most innovative cupcakes her customers have ever had. That's how she arrives at her unique flavors. She said she pulls inspiration from pretty much everywhere. In fact, her drumstick cupcake was inspired by walking through the ice cream aisle of the grocery store and seeing Drumstick ice cream cones. Malone took the idea to her bakery and created a vanilla cupcake with caramel, chocolate ganache and chopped peanuts.

Aside from cupcakes, Halo Cupcake can bake birthday, wedding and party cakes, cake pops, cookie cakes, brownies, pies, truffles and more. To place cupcake orders, 48 hours minimum notice is required, and for full-size cakes, a week notice is required. Contact Halo Cupcake for pricing and custom orders.
