By Brice Nelson

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Heartland Custom Homes has been building new homes in Central Wisconsin since 1972, specializing in Component and Modular home construction. We offer a turnkey building process, we take care of it all, from helping you select a site to hiring all the subcontractors. We have a full showroom and design center where we can show you the products that go into your new home. We also use the latest in 3D design technology, so we can show you your new home before its built!

What are some of the biggest decisions that a homeowner will need to make about the design of a new waterfront or lake home?

When we work with a homeowner on designing their new home on their waterfront property, the biggest decision they need to make is what is the best way to take advantage of the view, after all that is why they bought that piece of land. Things like the height of the ceiling to window configuration to where the house is placed on the land are all taken into account.

Can you briefly explain what an builder likes to know about the future homeowners to create the perfect house for them?

We sit down with every homeowner and make their "wishlist" which is made up of both wants and needs. Then we go through each item, at the end of this process we all have a very good idea what will be in this house, then we can start with preliminary designs.

What are some of the misconceptions you've come across about lake homes?

The biggest misconception about lake houses is that the lake house has to be big and it has to be expensive. We can design some very space effect plans and double the square footage by taking advantage of the basement, finishing it off and building a walkout with lots of daylight.

What are a few of the most in-demand features for waterfront homes in Wisconsin?

The most demanded items in a lake home are lots of big windows, high ceilings and natural materials, logs, stone, wood, to give the cabin feel and a 3 car garage to store all the toys!

What advice would you give a client who wants a lake home that combines progressive design and comfort?

The advice I would give someone who wants a home with design and comfort is to come see us. We have been doing this a long time and take the time to listen to every part of their story and seeing it in 3D before its built really takes the stress out of building.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you and your company?
