iCandy Graphics and Web Design Delivers Quality Work With A Positive Attitude

By Pamela Sosnowski

We've been taught that when life gives you lemons, to make lemonade out of them. In Candy Phelps' case, she turned lemons into iCandy -- iCandy Graphics to be exact, her own graphic design firm with a clever play on the phrase "eye candy." The positive attitude that turned her bad fortune around permeates the staff at her company and in the work they deliver for clients.

"I was inspired to open iCandy Graphics and Web Design because the company I worked for had started laying people off due to the recession in 2008," she explains.

"Those of us who were left were living in perpetual fear of being the next person to be let go. Watching so many companies across the U.S. lay off loyal employees who had worked for them for 30 or 40 years was upsetting. I wanted to start a different kind of business that cared about more its people than the bottom line. So after about year of preparation and saving, I quit my job and went out on my own. It was a risky time to venture out, but we saved up enough of a safety net that we had a small cushion in case it didn't work."

That risk paid off, and iCandy Graphics now provides a multitude of design and marketing services including building websites, logo design, search engine optimization, infographic creation, copywriting, social media marketing and more to clients that range from local small businesses to nationally recognized brands. For the past seven years the firm has worked with Morton Salt, Holiday Inn, Tumblewood Teas, and more.

Although they confess to being "obsessed with small businesses" on their website and relish in helping them succeed, no client is too big or small, and all receive the same level of personal attention and customer service. The team can also work with a business long-term to develop and executive their marketing strategy over time.

For Phelps and her team, attention to detail and high quality work are among iCandy Graphics' standout qualities. "We don't wait for the client to catch our mistakes, which is the big difference," she says.

"We have many quality assurance processes in place to ensure accurate, high quality work, and we invest in continuing education and training. We pride ourselves on having long-lasting relationships with our clients. Being reliable, responsive and supportive is all part of our customer service." The company also prides itself on its innovation, creativity, and authenticity.

The staff consists of Phelps, a lead web developer, a lead writer, a social media expert, and several graphic designers. While they come from varied backgrounds including working in the hospitality and music industries, the one thing they all have in common is sharing Phelps' beliefs in positivity and staying grateful.

In fact, Phelps begins each day by taking a gratitude walk around her neighborhood with her morning cup and coffee, and provides perks that keep her employees centered and happy.

"We provide flexible work hours for our team so they don't need to be stressed out about commuting or traffic," she says.

"We intentionally got an office with huge windows to ensure a lot of natural light, and we try to have walking meetings and walking breaks when possible to make sure we can get outside occasionally. Being able to work with lots of different businesses in many industries allows us to have interesting and ever-changing work, so we never get bored. We always play music in the office, and it's pretty standard to find us actually singing while we work. And of course, we only hire people who have positive attitudes, so that makes for a happy work environment."
