Lakeview Bakery and Deli Beckons With Scenery, Specials, and Friendly Service

By Pamela Sosnowski

Do you like your sandwich with a lake and smile on the side? Then you'll feel right at home at Lakeview Bakery and Deli. For over 15 years, the Madison deli has been serving up omelets, sandwiches, salads, coffee, and more in a laid back dining space overlooking Lake Monona.

"The atmosphere is very friendly; we pride ourselves on staff that openly like to get to know their customers and find out what they would like to see as well as welcoming anyone else in," owner Neale Hansen said. "Unpretentious is the best word; everyone is welcome."

Open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 4 PM, the deli offers up freshly made wraps, subs, soups, pizza, and other options for its lunch crowd. The baked goods selections include scones, cookies, bread, and more. Many customers are regulars and enjoy the variety as well as the affordable prices. Lakeview Bakery and Deli makes its food daily, from scratch, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

Lunch specials are offered throughout the week. Wednesday is pizza day, when pizza is available by the slice for $3, or $3.50 per slice for specialty toppings. Or for $8.50, a customer can enjoy a lunchbox that includes a whole sandwich along with their choice of soup, salad, or soda with chips or a cookie.

The Lakeview Bakery and Deli sits directly below the historic Hotel Ruby Marie, an 1870s hotel that still operates today.

"When the Hotel Ruby Marie was rebuilt which encompasses the second and third floors we saw a need to provide more complete service for our guests as well as the need for a good breakfast and lunch spot." Hansen said. "The deli has been open for approximately 18 years."

Its location in the downtown area makes it a popular place for tourists to grab a bite to eat or a drink. The deli also enjoys a great relationship with its neighbors, including the German themed restaurant and bar Essen House. In fact, Lakeview sells many Essen House German items including beer steins, vintage Hummel figurines, t-shirts, and other imported products.

The one complaint that the deli's customer base has is that it's not open on the weekends. Lakeview happily recommends, on their Facebook page, visiting their neighbors at the Come Back In Bar and Restaurant just down the street for Saturday and Sunday dining options.

During the week, the menu, attentive staff, and of course, the lake, awaits. To view the menu or learn more, visit lakeviewbakerydeli.com.
