Practice and Live the Yoga Way with Inner Sun Yoga

By Marina I. Jokic

Yoga has been said to boost both physical and mental awareness through sustained practice. The classes at Inner Sun Yoga Studio in Oshkosh, Wisconsin are designed with just this goal in mind and are accessible to everyone regardless of level of experience. The studio's goal is to promote an approachable and attainable image of yoga as a physical and mental practice.

Deb Sommerhalder is owner of Inner Sun Yoga and insists on knowing every one of her students personally. Aside from her focus on teaching, she wants to create a community of yoga practitioners who will support and learn from each other along the way. For Sommerhalder, yoga is not just about showing up to class, but rather adopting an entire philosophy of life and connecting with others.

"I also wanted to be able to have more classes and workshops so that students could delve deeper into not only the physical practice but also the ancient teachings of yoga," Sommerhalder said. "There is no judgement around what you can or cannot do; everyone is absorbed in [his or her] own practice and experience."

The list of yoga classes at Inner Sun Yoga includes yin and restorative, Hatha, Vinyasa, and a number of flowing styles. The studio also offers its unique brand of classes and workshops such as The Roll Model® Method (yoga massage therapy ball treatment), Hammock Yoga to deepen and support your postures, mantra (repetition of sound), and Pranayama (breath and meditation). There are 15 distinct yoga classes and seven aerial yoga classes accompanied by a prolific number of workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings.

Located inside Necessities for Wellness alongside Sacred Crane Healing Arts and Acupuncture, Inner Sun Yoga is part of a network of yoga instructors and healing professionals dedicated to improving people's lives. Once you enter the building, you immediately feel at peace and are prompted to sit, relax, and sip some tea.

There is plenty of natural light coming through the skylights as well as ambient lighting promoting a sense of peace and quiet. The ceiling is adorned with a crafted metal ceiling and the aerial silks used for the hammock classes. The colors are uplifting for the spirit, yet calming for the mind.

"Inner Sun is a place where we invite you to leave expectations behind and just be present in your own experience to awaken your inner sun," Sommerhalder said. "In this place, we are all one, practicing together and build[ing] a more peaceful community."

Instructors at the studio place special emphasis on spending one-on-one time with each student. In this way, they are able to acquaint themselves with students' health histories and concerns more closely and, in turn, offer pose modifications and other customized solutions. Teachers at Inner Sun Yoga work tirelessly to help boost your confidence by providing a better understanding of your body and the ways you can transition into group classes or a home practice.
