Steve Gold Wants To Tattoo You

By Jake Levin

An artist by trade, Steve Gold couldn't figure out which medium served him best for reaching his fullest potential. Forty years later, it's safe to say Gold found his calling.

Gold is a tattoo artist, and applies his trade at his very own parlor in Madison, Wis. at Steve's Tattoo and Body Piercing.

"Nothing seemed to fit me like tattooing," Gold said. "And I like people."

Gold employs three tattoo artists, including himself, as well as Corey and Dave; his parlor also features one piercing expert, Jessica.

The shop has always been known for great tattoo work and great piercings, and perhaps most importantly, clean surroundings. Gold is involved with the State Department of Health in developing proper methods of sterilization, health codes and licensing for tattooing and piercing.

"We set the standards to ensure you get the best quality tattoo or piercing possible," Gold said.

Gold fancies himself as a friendly artist, one who is open and willing to give the customer what they want.

"It's not about what I want to do," he said. "We like challenges."

Having tattooed all over the world over the course of his career, Gold is no stranger to some frequently asked questions about tattooing and piercing.

He's blunt in saying that it will hurt, but said that it is tolerable and nothing you can't handle.

"It feels like a scratch or bad sunburn," he said.

Pricing for tattoos begins around $75 at Gold's parlor, and it will fluctuate based on how much work and detail is needed. Gold warns against price shopping, saying that bargaining over cost is a bad way to make an impression with your artist.

"Remember, good tattoos aren't cheap, cheap tattoos aren't good," Gold said. "People who 'price shop' for tattoos end up with inferior tattoos; don't let that happen to you."
