Sweet Tea Cakes Powered By a Family Passion For Baking

By Pamela Sosnowski

At Sweet Tea Cakes of Madison, a passion for baking runs in the family.

The Mineral Point Road cake shop was founded by a mother and daughter team who both discovered how much they loved creating desserts when they took a Wilton cake decorating class together ten years ago. Fast-forward to 2018, and Julie Loeffelholz and her daughter, Kristin, are now making custom cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, chocolate covered pretzels and more for the Madison community.

"For the last ten years, we have baked and designed cakes and other treats for friends and family," Kristin Loeffelholz said. "I went to Valencia College for three years for baking and pastry management in Orlando, Florida. It was always a dream of ours to open our own cake shop. The timing seemed right when I moved home in February to work on opening Sweet Tea Cakes."

Sweet Tea Cakes opened in September 2017 and in a very short time has amassed several glowing online reviews from customers who note the freshness of their products, friendly service, and creativity of the desserts' designs. The bakery's menu is ever changing, with Julie and Kristin dreaming up new flavors inspired by the changing seasons. Cakes are always available in several standard flavors that include vanilla, dark chocolate, almond, chocolate peanut butter, Irish cream, and many more.

But it's the custom cakes for birthdays and other special occasions that are knocking out customers, with their three dimensional toppers made of fondant. In just a few months since opening, Sweet Tea Cakes has commissioned Star Wars-themed cakes and cakes shaped like a castle, a stack of books, Hot Wheels cars, and more. As Julie Loeffelholz says, the chance to make one of these cakes is always a part of the job she and her daughter look forward to.

"Our favorite part about working together is getting to design all the cakes together and bounce ideas off of each other until we come up with the perfect design," she said. "We get so excited when a client calls with a fun cake theme and we can make their cake dreams a reality."

Designs on all desserts range from cute to elegant, and samplers are available for mini cupcakes. The shop is open every day except for Sunday and Monday, and the Loeffelholzs look forward to greeting new and repeat customers.

"We have a lot of other options for the people who don't just want a cake," Julie said. We make cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, and also chocolates. There's something for everyone at Sweet Tea Cakes."
