Take the 18-Hole Challenge at Bridges Golf Course

By Paul Rowe

Bridges Golf Course is an 18-hole challenge on Madison's north side. Director Becky Iverson says "accuracy is key" when playing this championship course. As a former 20-year Ladies Professional Golfers Association (LPGA) tour player, she should know.

Golfers are known for their seriousness, but Bridges golf scrambles bring out the fun in those who participate. "We are known for our two-person golf scrambles," exclaims Iverson. Scrambles are held seven times a season and always revolve around a theme. Each scramble includes an 18-hole round of golf, a cart, food and prizes, all for about the price of one round. You may even win a season membership. Fall 2015 scramble events include Omar's Chile Open in September and Football Frenzy in October.

Then there is footgolf, which is a combination of golf and soccer, played with a No. 5 regulation soccer ball according to most golf rules except on a shortened course with larger cups. Bridges offers this newer sport for open play at certain times, as well as hosts footgolf leagues and tournaments.

Want to start a golf league or transfer yours to Bridges? Iverson and staff do all the work for you. They schedule tee times, coordinate pairings and handle competitions, prizes, and specials and even enter handicap scores. Staff also runs your hassle-free season-end party. As a bonus not found at other area courses, each league player receives a loyalty card worth over $50 and food and drink specials on league night.

In keeping with their knack for coordination and organization, the staff at Bridges specializes in private or corporate events and celebrations from fundraisers to parties and weddings. Iverson says, "We do about 50 corporate or charity golf outings a year."

Along with the golf course, Bridges has a full-service bar and restaurant open all year. "We take great pride in our ability to run corporate events properly," Iverson proudly states. "Most companies just want to get out and enjoy the day, so we make sure that everything is done before they get here and take care of all their needs while they are on the course."

Get up to par for the Friday Fish Fry at Plata's Bar and Restaurant, served year round, with many seafood options, including code, tilapia, walleye, lake perch and salmon. Maybe you would rather have shrimp in pesto sauce over noodles. The choices are varied and most come with a wedge (of lemon), plus coleslaw, fresh bread and choice of potato or vegetable side.

Golfers, grab your driver and head to Bridges Golf Course to learn firsthand why Madison is such a great area for golfing. Plata's affords non-golfers a place to sip that special drink while taking in the oh-so-green view.
