Timeless Interior Design Trends: An Interview with Mary Best of Mary Best Designs

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

My background is in Fashion/Textiles. My love of interiors began with my first job at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. I founded Mary Best Designs in 2003 which began with custom sewing projects for the home. It has evolved and expanded into interior design consultation.

What are some of the services your company provides?

Besides high quality custom sewing, such as window treatments, slipcovers, bedding, pillows, cushions, etc. I provide assistance with remodeling finish selections, paint colors, home staging/repurposing, window, wall, flooring, lighting, and accessory selections.

What are some examples of designs that have "staying power"? What are some classic colors and styles that will do this?

My idea of staying power:

  1. The color gray. I don't think it's trendy, I consider it current. You see it in paint, fabric, rugs, furniture, flooring...even if it's a subtle undertone.
  2. The color black. As an exterior trim or a lacquered table or door. It can ground a room. Classic color.

What are some design fads I should avoid if I want to remain trendy for years?

Design fads to avoid if you want to remain trendy for years:

  1. Don't get stuck in just one style. If you live in a traditional home, that doesn't mean you can't have abstract art and a mid century chair. Mix it up!
  2. Tile in the bathroom or kitchen with intricate designs or borders. Keep it simple.

More specifically, what are some functional design elements I can add to my bathroom or kitchen?

The best functional element you can add to your bathroom or kitchen is lighting. It can be such a statement piece.

Do you believe that neutral colors are always the way to go if you want to remain timeless? What are some fun color options that will also be timeless?

If you want to be timeless, neutral colors are the way to go. They're so many beautiful shades of white, ivory, linen, gray, sand. You can always bring color with art, accessories or fabric. A rug full of color with light neutral walls is very current and timeless.

Do you agree that hardwood flooring is something that will never go out of style?

Hardwood floors will never go out of style. The color of hardwood floors is what changes and goes in and out of style. However, if hardwoods are not in your budget, they make beautiful luxury vinyl flooring that can really look like wood. Also cork and bamboo flooring have come along way and are a great alternative.
